Shrink photographic PNG files with HEIC compression

PNG is excellent for lossless graphics, but photographic PNGs can be enormous. HEIC is a better storage format when the image is a photo and compatible software is available.

This conversion intentionally flattens transparency onto white because HEIC reader support for alpha varies. Logos and interface graphics are usually better kept as PNG, WebP or AVIF.

Transparency: Transparent PNG areas are flattened onto white. Keep PNG or choose WebP/AVIF if alpha transparency is essential.

What you get converting PNG to HEIC

Major photo savings

Photographic PNG files can become substantially smaller after HEIC encoding.

Simple RGB output

Transparent and palette images are normalized for predictable viewing.

Selectable quality

Adjust compression strength to suit previews, archives or device storage.

Source preserved

The PNG remains unchanged while a separate HEIC file is downloaded.

What to expect: The HEIC will usually be far smaller, but the conversion becomes lossy. Flat graphics and sharp text may show compression more readily than photographs.

When to convert PNG to HEIC

  • Compressing lossless photo scans for a compatible archive
  • Reducing oversized PNG camera exports
  • Creating HEIC copies for storage on Apple devices

PNG to HEIC — frequently asked questions

It is placed on white because this converter writes predictable opaque HEIC output.

PNG stores pixels losslessly, while HEIC applies modern lossy photographic compression.

Usually not. PNG, WebP or AVIF better suit transparency and crisp graphic edges.

Yes. Width and height are retained unless orientation metadata requires rotation.

Yes. Palette-based PNG input is decoded and normalized before HEIC encoding.
